What to Wear for Professional Headshots

What you wear has a bigger impact on your headshot than almost anything else. The right clothing keeps the focus on your face and makes you look confident and current. Here is how to choose with confidence.

Start with solid, flattering colours

Solid colours photograph best. Mid-tones and deeper shades — navy, charcoal, forest green, burgundy — read as professional and flatter most skin tones. If you want to look approachable, softer blues and warm neutrals work beautifully. Save bright neons and stark white for another day, as they can distract or blow out under studio lighting.

Avoid busy patterns and large logos

Tight stripes, checks and loud prints compete with your face and can create a distracting shimmer in photos. Visible brand logos date an image quickly. When in doubt, keep it simple and timeless — you want the headshot to still look right in two or three years.

Fit matters more than brand

Clothes that fit well through the shoulders and neckline make the biggest difference, because that is the area a headshot actually shows. Bring a lint roller and make sure everything is pressed. Necklines that frame the face — a clean collar, a simple crew or a structured blazer — always work well.

Bring options

We recommend bringing two or three tops so we can see what works best on camera and match the look to how you will use the images — corporate, creative or personal branding. Layers like a jacket or cardigan give us variety without needing a full outfit change.

Still unsure? Tell us how you plan to use your photos when you book a session and we will help you plan your wardrobe.
