How to Get Comfortable in Front of the Camera

“I’m not photogenic” is the most common thing we hear — and it is almost never true. Feeling awkward in front of a camera is normal, and a few simple techniques will help you look relaxed and natural.

Remember it is a skill, not a talent

Looking good in photos is something you can learn, and a good photographer does most of the work by directing you. You do not need to know poses in advance; you just need to show up and follow along.

Breathe and drop your shoulders

Tension lives in the shoulders and jaw. Take a slow breath out just before each frame, let your shoulders fall, and relax your mouth. This one habit removes most of the stiffness people worry about.

Think of something real

A genuine expression beats a forced smile every time. Picture someone you like, or a moment that makes you laugh, right before the shutter. The warmth reaches your eyes, which is what makes a portrait feel authentic.

Trust your photographer

Our job is to guide your posture, angle and expression and to show you along the way that it is working. Once you see a few frames you like, the nerves fade fast and the session becomes genuinely enjoyable.
