A great headshot starts long before you sit in front of the camera. A little preparation makes the whole session smoother and gives you images you are genuinely happy to use. Here is the checklist we share with clients at our Melbourne studio.
Book any haircut or colour about a week ahead, not the day before — you want it to look settled and natural, not brand new. Keep your skin routine consistent and drink plenty of water; hydrated skin photographs far better than tired skin. If you use skincare treatments, avoid trying anything new that could cause redness or a reaction.
Bring two or three options in solid, mid-tone colours that suit your work and personality. Avoid busy patterns, logos and bright neons, which pull attention away from your face. Make sure everything is clean, ironed and fits well through the shoulders — that is the part of the frame people actually see in a headshot.
Get a proper night’s sleep; it shows around the eyes more than anything else. Eat a normal meal before you arrive so your energy stays up through the session. Give yourself enough time to get to the studio without rushing — arriving relaxed is half the job done.
Come as the polished version of your everyday self rather than a completely different person. If you wear makeup, keep it natural and matte to avoid shine under the lights. Most importantly, relax — a good photographer will direct your posture and expression, so all you need to bring is a little energy and trust the process.
